Catawba dancer group is a folklor group of people from Poland . There   life culture consists of  a native american drum group which takes part   in dance and theatre. We are all interested in the Native North Americans and have found that Native American singing and dancing is a nice way to pursue this interest, meet others and make friends, which at the same time includes a creative element. Catawba dancer’s group was formed in 1975 and have been singing at several in Polish Council Freand ‘s Native American.

As you may know, there are many kinds of Native Americans, and they all had and have their own cultural traditions, e.g. singing and dancing. The kind of singing and dancing we do is called northern plains style. It means the kind of dancing that is practiced by Native Americans on the northen plains: lakota (sioux), blackfoot, cheyenne, assiniboine etc. This type of singing and dancing is still very popular in the US and southern parts of Canada. We do this contemporary style because we feel it's important to show how Native Americans look today, and not how they looked a hundred years ago. In repertuar we have 41 dance’s, from 4 regions Nort America.

Native American singing is very different to European music and is relatively difficult to learn for it to sound right. To us it is very important that our dance outfits, singing and dancing is as close to "the real thing" as posible. Therefore we use a long of time finding books and articles on the subject, studying the correct patterns and colours and ordering the right materials from America.

We have learnt the singing and drumming from both Native American lecturers at the Society KONDOR.

. Apart from that, we have listen and continue to listen to a lot of tapes and CDs with various Native American drum groups and read articles etc. to get the right sound and feeling. Most of the group have participated in powwows in America.

Exhibition dances

The group also gives exhibition dances in Native American singing and dancing at schools etc. It usually takes 45 – 180 minutes, and costs vary according to how many singers and dancers are requested. An exhibition with 2 singers and 4 dancers (minimum) costs 1000 Euro. Group 8 - 16 dancers costs 1400 Euro. This amount covers direct and indirect expences for the exhibition: transportation, food, administration, PR, repairs/maintenance of dance outfits and drums and a continuing improvement of our knowledge about Native American singing and dancing.
